Club ACO – Meet our volunteers: Jean-Marc Bouilly, Marshal

Jean-Marc Bouilly is one of the 2,000 marshals working around the 13.6-km Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans. He is now chief marshal at post 33 overlooking the Karting Esse.

Jean-Marc Bouilly discovered Club ACO when he became a track marshal 24 years ago. A fan of motorsport from his early years, Jean-Marc was invited to a post during the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans by a marshal. “Two months later, I’d started training to become a marshal myself!”

His work and dedication paid off and Jean-Marc became a chief marshal 15 years ago. He is now based at post 33, on the inside of the Karting Esse. “We forget we’re volunteers here. Our team is like a second family!” So much so, the team – originating from the Netherlands, Hungary and Spain – has been nicknamed ‘The family of 33’.

One moment in particular stands out in Jean-Marc’s mind from his many years of service: “It was in 2002. Following a crash on the Mulsanne Straight, an engine leaked oil over 400 metres. We had an hour-and-a-half to clear it up. We did it by torchlight and could feel the draught from the cars pushing us along!”
