Christian Moity, journalist and 24 Hours of Le Mans historian, has passed away

Author and journalist Christian Moity died Friday, March 10th at 87 years young. To his family and loved ones, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest extends its sincerest condolences.

Christian Moity began his career in 1952 as a publicist with Automobile magazine. Two years later, he took the helm of the sports section and remained in that service for more than 30 years. Later the journalist joined Group Hommell and created Auto Passion magazine, serving as its Editor-in-Chief for six years.

Truly passionate about the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1978 Christian Moity, after having published his first book about the 24 Hours of Le Mans, "Le Mans 1949-1973," created the Yearbook, the inimitable official book of each edition of the legendary endurance race. He co-wrote the yearbooks with Jean-Marc Tesseidre.

He also participated in editing a trilogy dedicated to endurance racing entitled "Cinquantenaire des 24 Heures du Mans 1923–1982" (50th Anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans), the double volume "Le Mans 1923–1992" and the three book series "Le Mans 1923–2010" in collaboration with Alain Bienvenu and Jean-Marc Tesseidre.

In 2005, Christian Moity was awarded the Spirit of Le Mans Trophy, a distinction granted by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest to individuals embodying the spirt of the 24 Hours.

The ACO honors the memory of this true enthusiast and trusted historian of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
